Dreamy Broadview Hotel wedding in Toronto

You know those people that feel like friends immediately? Yup. These were them. Elli and Rob are both artists living in San Francisco that found me on Instagram to photograph their Broadview Hotel Wedding in Toronto. Elli is a dancer and Rob is a photographer, so I was extra honoured they chose me to capture their special day. There was an immediate connection between us over some of their less traditional ideas about weddings. Spoiler alert - I love that they cut the cake, but in their own ‘special’ way. (I must admit the cake cutting tradition baffles me a little, especially as someone who doesn't love cake). I also may or may not have ended our video call saying out loud "oh! Please be my friend!" and then panic-checking that I had actually turned off the video chat. No one needs to see just how nerdy I am.

I'm not entirely sure how to explain what it is that I love about these two, they're both so charming and enigmatic. There's this magnetism TO them and between them. Elli describes them as total opposites that fit together perfectly.

On the day of their wedding it was pretty chilly in Toronto and threatening to rain. We took it in stride and went out for portraits anyway with umbrellas in hand. Though it cleared up while we were outside, we didn't last long, but we also didn't feel the need to push it, as there are so many gorgeous places to shoot inside the Broadview Hotel for a wedding. The light! The windows! The decor! I'm so madly in love with the room Elli & Rob were staying in with those arched windows and wallpaper. A photographer’s dream! The venue is eclectic, artistic, and chic. It isn't a traditional wedding venue, but it has character and elegance at the same time. I think it blended elements of Rob and Elli’s personalities beautifully. To top it all off, the staff are delightful! The Broadview Hotel is a very welcome addition to wedding venues in Toronto.

Elli was quite shy and quiet at first, which I can totally relate to, but once the dance floor opened up she really began to shine and it was magic. I remember turning to Rob and saying "you know those people that you fall in love with instantly but you're not entirely sure why? I think I know why now", he agreed.

There was so much heart throughout the entire day. The emotions were palpable throughout the ceremony and speeches. Everyone who got up to speak managed to do so with a mixture of sentimentality and humour, while remaining genuine. It felt like their friends and family took me in and I did NOT want to leave that dance floor. My second shooter basically had to pull me off it.

In short, I miss these two something fierce!

Frances

I'm Frances-- a photographer with a fine art background and a serious soft spot for love, wide open spaces, wandering barefoot and giving epic hugs. I'm drawn to connections, anything outdoors, raw emotion, natural light and the human experience. I am a big believer in bear hugs, loving big, and making things by hand. I think I look ridiculous when I laugh, but it never stops me from doing so.

Photography for me is all about connection and creating a window into your lives for future generations to peer into. Every one and every relationship is unique. Your images should be too. Annie Leibovitz said it best "When I say I want to photograph someone, what it really means is that I'd like to know them." That is so true for me. I don't just want to photograph you, I want to know you.
